Have participants identify which level felt most impactful
Use longer or more complex stories
Why It Works
Listening is not a single skill. It’s a set of layers.
Most people stop at hearing words. This exercise trains participants to go deeper: to understand structure, meaning, and emotion.
In storytelling and leadership, this leads to stronger connection, better feedback, and more effective communication.
Pro Tips
Encourage participants to slow down and be intentional
Remind them not to jump ahead to interpretation too quickly
Affirm each level of listening as a distinct skill

Inspired by coaching and communication frameworks that emphasize reflective and empathetic listening
Try This In Real Life
In your next conversation, try moving beyond summarizing what someone said and reflect what it meant to them.
