What This Game Teaches
This game builds collaboration, adaptability, and shared ownership of a story, while helping participants practice letting go of control.
Group Size
Pairs
Time
5–15 minutes
Energy Level
Medium to High
How to Play
Two participants begin telling a story together, with one person starting.
At any moment, either person can initiate a high-five.
When the high-five happens, the other person immediately takes over the story.
The story continues with control shifting back and forth through high-fives.
Variations
Set a rule that high-fives must happen at least every 10 seconds
Add a genre or theme to guide the story
Turn it into a group exercise with multiple players rotating in
Why It Works
Most people approach storytelling and collaboration with a need to control the outcome. This game disrupts that instinct. It forces participants to accept what’s been established, build on it, and trust their partner.
This is the essence of “yes, and.”
In real-world settings, this translates directly to better teamwork, more dynamic conversations, and stronger co-created ideas.
Pro Tips
Encourage participants to support the existing story rather than restart it
Remind them that clarity is more important than cleverness
If someone freezes, the partner can jump in with a high-five to help

Try This In Real Life
In meetings or brainstorming sessions, practice building on ideas instead of redirecting or shutting them down.
