Story of my life

What This Game Teaches

This exercise teaches participants how to distill their life or experience into a clear, concise narrative with a beginning, middle, and end.

Group Size

Individuals, pairs, or small groups

Time

10–20 minutes

Energy Level

Low to Medium

How to Play

  1. Ask participants to tell the story of their life in one minute.

  2. Encourage them to include: A clear beginning (where they started) A turning point or key moment Where they are now

  3. Give a few minutes to think or outline.

  4. Share stories in pairs or small groups.

  5. Optionally, repeat the exercise to refine and improve.

Variations

No planning. Just tell the version that shows up.

Reduce the time to 30 seconds for a greater challenge.

Expand to 2 minutes for more detail.

Focus on a specific theme (career, relationship, creative journey)

Change partners and do again but tell a different “version” of your life.  Examine your life story through a different lens (such as geographic, career, ambition, pets, or collections)

Why It Works

Constraint creates clarity.

By limiting time, participants are forced to identify what truly matters in their story. This builds the ability to prioritize key moments and communicate them efficiently.

In real-world situations—introductions, interviews, pitches—this skill is invaluable.

Pro Tips

  • Encourage participants to focus on key moments, not every detail

  • Remind them that clarity is more important than completeness

  • Have them repeat the exercise.  The second version is always stronger
